Here’s an example of one of my rules for putting together an outfit together; always try to mix inspirations.
The symmetry of the printed design on these high cut shorts feels to me to be lightly inspired by the decorative design of a matador’s traditional garb - a traje de luces (a suit of light).
It’s not a gaudy or overpowering statement, but enough to wonderfully contrast the lighter 70’s feeling, loose fitting mesh top and the tassels on these shoes by Schutz. I’m a sucker for any strappy shoe by the way, but these are incredibly comfortable.
Having a whole outfit in monochrome makes it a little easier to mix inspirations, especially when they’re subtle, light, and complementary. But it also sets you up to make a statement with an accent piece, or a pop of colour. This classic clutch by Saint Laurent would raise the stakes on any outfit, and nothing could be more satisfying than leaving all the colour for your look right on your lips - strong, audacious, matador red.
Mix it up. Should 70s inspired pieces mix well with what feels like an old world Mediterranean inspired aesthetic? I don’t know. But try gently mixing your own inspirations and see what you get.
